Ever paused for a second when you saw a QR code on a restaurant table for the first time, unsure what to actually do next? You're not alone — and it's a small but real friction point in the shift toward digital ordering. We wrote a short, practical guide for anyone (or any team introducing this to customers) who wants a clear walkthrough: how to scan it, what happens next, and answers to the questions people usually have (Do I need an app? Is my payment safe? What if I get stuck?). If you're a restaurant, cafe, or dhaba owner thinking about modernizing your ordering experience, this is also a useful one to share with first-time customers. LinkedIn and Facebook do not allow websites to pre-fill post text. Instagram has no web share URL — your caption is copied so you can paste it in the app. Use the share buttons above.
You sit down at a cafe, and instead of a laminated menu, there's a small card on the table with a black-and-white square code and the words "Scan to Order." If you've never done this before, it can feel like one more app you have to figure out just to get a cup of coffee. It's actually much simpler than it looks — here's exactly what happens, step by step.
What is a QR code menu, really?
A QR code is just a shortcut. Instead of typing a website address into your phone, your camera reads the code and takes you straight there — usually to a mobile-friendly page showing that outlet's full menu, prices, and photos. No app store, no download, no account required to just look around.
How to actually order
1. Open your phone's camera app (not a separate QR scanner app — every phone made in the last several years can read QR codes right from the regular camera). If your camera app doesn't pick it up for some reason, you can also open the Google app and tap the small camera icon inside the search bar — it works just as well for scanning QR codes.
2. Point it at the code on your table. A notification or link will pop up on your screen — tap it. If you used the Google search bar's camera, you'll usually see a small floating URL appear near the bottom of the screen — just tap that to open it.
3. Browse the menu. You'll usually see the same categories you'd expect from a printed menu — starters, mains, drinks, desserts — often with photos and short descriptions, which is genuinely easier to browse than a menu card in low restaurant lighting.
4. Tap an item to see the details. Many dishes let you choose a size or add extras (like "half or full," or "extra cheese") right there before adding it to your cart.
5. Add items to your cart and review your order. You'll see a running total, so there's no surprise when the bill comes.
6. Place your order. Depending on the outlet, you might be asked to enter your phone number and a one-time code (OTP) — this is just to make sure the order goes to the right table and to let you track its status. It's optional at some outlets and required at others.
7. Track your order right from your phone. No more wondering if the kitchen forgot about you — you'll see when it's been accepted, when it's being prepared, and when it's ready.
8. Pay when you're ready. Some outlets let you pay instantly through a UPI link right after ordering; others are happy to settle the bill at the counter when you're done. Either way, you'll know your total before you commit.
